Nigeria has been in a stifling grip of inadequate power and energy supply since recent years. It is worth noting that a nation that is endowed with nature’s priciest gifts such as oil, gold and diamonds is facing turmoil due to an epileptic electricity supply. Despite investing unprecedented finances in the power sector and steeply increasing electricity tariffs, the electricity crisis in Nigeria has been insurmountable.
This crisis is hampering the economic growth of Africa’s most populous nation by discouraging foreign investors and disrupting the local Nigerian businesses.
THE CHALLENGES TO POWER SUPPLY IN NIGERIA:
The total energy supply serving a population of over 160 million is less than a mere 1500 megawatts (MW). Nigeria boasts of a power generation capacity of over 6000MW. However, the output turnover is somewhere close to 2000MW. This huge gap of around 4000MW between the nation’s immense potential and the output is widening due to an inadequate supply of gas to the existing multitude of power plants in Nigeria. The reasons pin pointed border along leadership inadequacies, inadequate gas supply, shortage of water in dams and the savage acts of vandalism.
According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Power, the power sector has lost close to 120 to 150 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMScf/d) along the Trans Forcardos (TFP) and Escravos-Lagos (ELP) pipelines. The gas loss of a mere 150 MMScf/d at any point in time translates to a reduction of about 500 MW of power supply.
In terms of coal deposits Nigeria ranks 7th on the global platform. However, it is yet to tap into this resource for an optimum generation of power supply.
The Nigerian economy bases its hopes on Buhari’s election manifesto that promised a revitalisation of the country’s coal-to-power capacities.
IMPLICATION OF RECURRING POWER OUTAGES ON NIGERIAN SMEs:
The small and medium sized business set ups are the worst affected by Nigeria’s electricity crisis.
Most of the Nigerian SMEs and residences resort to generators for their backup power supply, which requires a lot of investment in terms of money and time. Also, they face no respite from the unreasonable electricity bills for the electricity that is not being supplied to them. The financial burden borne by them reaches unnatural depths.
Moreover, businesses that cannot afford the luxury of generators suffer from persistent blackouts.
THE WAY OUT:
As the situations look bleak, Nigerians are in the relentless quest for a possible solution to put an end to this energy catastrophe.
NaijaGoSocial reinvents the country’s current scenario by introducing a superhero, THE NEPA-MAN – The hero with a never ending supply of energy.
Yes, boundless and everlasting energy!
The hero promises an inexhaustible storehouse of Megawatts to end all electricity woes. Now, Nigerians are free from the terrorising grip of electricity blackouts and the consequent financial burdens.
NEPA-MAN yields the umbrella of luminance which pervades over the economic depression and raises the industrial and commercial productivity of Nigeria.
Let’s welcome NEPA-MAN and support him in this noble cause so that each household, each SME, each Industry, every nook and corner of Nigeria has a guaranteed supply of abundant electricity!
